Synovitis and tenosynovitis are two painful inflammatory conditions associated with arthritis. Synovitis is the inflammation of the synovial membrane that lines the synovial joints. The join swells due to excess synovial fluid causing pain, particularly when the joint is moved.
Similarly, tenosynovitis is the term that describes the inflammation of the fluid-filled sheath that surrounding a tendon. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the afflicted joint.
Treatment for synovitis and mild tenosynovitis includes anti-inflammatory medications. Steroid injections to the affected joint may also be used. For more severe cases of tenosynovitis, outpatient surgery may be recommended.
