Fungal Infection

Fungal Infection

A severe case of Athlete’s foot.

A very common fungal infection of the feet is athlete’s foot (also called tinea pedis). It causes redness, itching, burning, peeling, and sometimes blisters and sores. It can also infect the toenails – causing them to become thick, hard, discolored or even deformed. The fungus that causes athletes foot grows best in warm, moist environments – like shoes, socks, or locker rooms.

Several steps can be taken to prevent athlete’s foot. Wearing sandals in public showers can help prevent the spread of athletes foot. You can also wear shoes that allow the feet to breathe and wash your feet daily with soap and water. Feet should always be dried thoroughly after washing.

Athlete’s foot can typically be treated effectively with a anti-fungal medication that is applied to skin. Some severe cases may require oral medications (taken by mouth).
