Haglund’s Deformity patient

Haglund’s Deformity is a bony outgrowth that develops on the upper back area of the heel bone (calcaneus). Since the enlargement occurs in the area where a high heel shoe rubs against the heel, it is sometimes called a “pump bump.” When the bony enlargement rubs against shoes, the soft tissue near the Achilles tendon becomes irritated. Symptoms of Haglund’s Deformity include:

  • Bony prominence on the back of the heel.
  • Heel pain.
  • Swelling of the back of the heel.
  • Redness on the back of the heel.

Risk factors include:

  • High arches.
  • Tight Achilles tendon.
  • Walking on the outside of the heel
